The musketeer showcase

The Musketeers in contemporary cinema (2000 and beyond)

The Musketeers in the blockbuster era (2000-2010)

At the beginning of the 21stᵉ century, the Musketeers have established themselves as key figures in cloak-and-dagger films revisited for new generations. In 2001, Peter Hyams made The Musketeer, which blends the traditional aesthetics of historical films with action sequences inspired by kung fu films. Although criticised for its simplified script, the film’s spectacular choreography has won it over. Other projects are exploring the potential of television and animated adaptations, particularly productions aimed at young and family audiences.

The Musketeers as a visual performance (2010-2020)

With Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers (2011), the myth enters the era of spectacular special effects. This film offers an exaggerated steampunk version of the adventures of d’Artagnan and his companions, incorporating airships and Matrix-style choreographed combat. Although controversial for its liberties with the original work, this adaptation reflects a desire to attract fans of modern action and fantasy. At the same time, television productions such as the British series The Musketeers (2014-2016) are breathing a more authentic and mature life into the story, exploring the complexity of the characters and their place in history.

The Three Musketeers (2011)

The Three Musketeers (2011)

Paul W. S. Anderson's take on the Three Musketeers is the least successful in cinema and undoubtedly on the podium of bad taste.

Enduring fascination in the 21stᵉ century (2020 and beyond)

The Musketeers continue to fascinate, as shown by the recent ambitious adaptations. In 2023, Martin Bourboulon produced a duology with the ‘Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan’ and ‘The Three Musketeers: Milady’, offering a modern yet respectful take on Dumas’s novels. These films feature a prestigious cast and attention to historical detail, while capturing the epic, romantic essence of the story. New international projects also bear witness to the universal impact of the Musketeers, adapting their exploits to contemporary themes.
