As the repository for the archives of the ministries responsible for military affairs, the Service historique de la Défense (SHD) has one of the richest specialist libraries in France, representing the memory of the armed forces and the bodies responsible for planning, organising and conducting the defence of France’s interests.

D’Artagnan and the Musketeers occupy a special place in popular culture. While their status as international myths owes much to the pen of Alexandre Dumas, the characters were inspired by historical figures whose traces are preserved in archives.
